Home Security is Always Important.

Keeping your home secure from year to year is one of life’s pressing concerns. Especially when you consider that the number of reported burglaries has increased by around 8% over the past year according to Government statistics – with 74% of burglars simply entering through the front door. With this in mind, we’re here to help you stay as safe as you can in the new year.

Keep everything locked up whenever you're out.

Despite being an obvious point, there are often so many cases of people simply forgetting to lock up their possessions – whether it’s the front door to your home, your kitchen windows, your car or otherwise. Ensuring you have a strategy in place to help you remember definitely can’t hurt; perhaps leave sticky notes dotted around for yourself to remind you to lock everything up before you leave. Or even set a reminder on your phone each morning to go off before you head out the door for work. However you manage it, making sure to lock everything up before you leave is of paramount importance.

Make sure your front door is sturdy.

Of course, if simply locking the front door was enough to stop a burglary, we’d probably see a drop in around 90% of all burglaries in the UK. Just locking your door isn’t enough – you need to ensure it’s strong enough to withstand a swift kick, or the locks are strong enough not to simply be forced open. Getting a bar fitted might help, or perhaps it’s worth contacting a professional at the MLA (Master Locksmiths Association) to check if your doors are up to the UK’s locksmithing security standards.

Get an alarm system fitted.

If the worst comes to worst, and an intruder does make it into your home, you’ll want a reliable alarm system fitted that will alert neighbours – or even directly contact the local police – to ensure that your house isn’t just easy pickings. There are many systems and features available now that can include CCTV cameras, or even detect when a window is broken and immediately set off the alarm. Not only with the loud noise help to deter the intruder, but it’ll alert anyone around that may be able to assist you. We’ve put together a list of the top security systems of 2019 for you to take a look at if you can’t decide which to go for.

Upgrade to British Standard (BS3621) locks.

Ensuring your locks are up to standard is another important way to ensure your home security is up to scratch. Often, most home insurance companies will require you to have BS3621 locks fitted before they will insure any possessions in the property. Most locksmiths will provide these as standard when you request new locks to be fitted in your property, so it might be worth checking that you have them installed. If not, you can always give us a call.

Leave your keys somewhere safe.

If you have to leave car keys or other house keys in your property while you are away, it’s important you keep them hidden from any potential intruders. It might even be a good idea to get yourself a safe – that way you can store both your more valuable possessions and keys away from any thieves that wish to break into your home.
