Knowledge Is Power : Things You Should Know

1. New British standards : A five lever mortise lock should comply with BS3621 which means the throw or the length that the bolt once locked should now be 20mm. By complying with BS3621 you can be certain that most thieves wouldn't be able to pick your lock. If you have older locks that do not comply with British standards, you may be invalidating your insurance in the event of a burglary. Other things to consider with BS3621 are latch operation with 10 Newtons sideload, 40 Newtons follower force and 25 Newtons closing force.

2. Older UPVC door locks may not incorporate "multi-point" locking these can be added retrospectively to your existing door in many cases. Some UPVC door manufacturers may suggest otherwise and attempt to sell you a new door for £300 - £600, this usually isn't necessary and updating the locks only cost a fraction of that. In many cases a multi-point locking system can be added to a normal wooden door, this is best from new but a door with other locking systems previously fitted could be modified to multi-point depending on how much wood has already been removed.

3. When moving into your new home especially a previously owned one you may not receive all the keys and jeopardize security. Our locksmith can assess all of your locks and offer a quick and easy replacement cost which whilst affordable, offers something money cannot buy, peace of mind . We can also tailor locks to your needs, you may wish to carry a key to every door, this could be made as simple as one key to fit everything including your house doors, the garage and even the shed padlock. Should there be a mixture of mortise locks and cylinder locks you may only need to carry two keys for the whole house. This may prove easier than four or more keys.

4. Most police services or local councils have a crime prevention unit who will attend your property to assess your security needs, we can fit or alter your existing security to suit the crime prevention advice given so you know that what is being done is necessary and we make it affordable too.
